Street sweeping season is here! Sweeping the streets in Minneapolis helps to protect our environment, keeping leaves and debris from clogging storm drains and polluting our local waterways. Remember, while debris such as leaves might be “natural”, anything that goes down a storm drain flows directly into our creeks, lakes and the Mississippi River. Decomposing plant material in the water encourages growth of harmful aquatic plants and algae.
Never push leaves, grass clippings, or other debris into the street – it’s bad for our waters, causes safety hazards, and is against the law. Help clean up leaves that sweepers can’t get and put them with your bagged yard waste.
Clearing material out of a storm drain grate and leaving the debris by the curb outside the storm drain before street sweeping helps our waterways.
