In 2024 Public Works will install the following Vision Zero improvements along Johnson St NE & 14th Ave NE:
- 4-to-3 lane safety conversion along Johnson St NE between the 35W ramps/Quarry intersection and 14th Ave NE
- Two-way, delineator-protected bikeway along Johnson St NE between the 35W ramps/Quarry intersection and 14th Ave NE
- New bicycle boulevard along 14th Ave NE between Johnson St NE and Fillmore St NE
- To consist of pavement markings, wayfinding, and bikeway street signs
These improvements will be implemented in coordination with the Johnson St/35W ramps intersection reconstruction also happening this year.
The goal of the Vision Zero Program is to increase the safety of all roadway users by:
- Allowing people walking and rolling to navigate one direction of traffic at a time when crossing
- Creating shorter crossing distances for people walking and rolling across the street
- Improving vehicle yielding to those walking and rolling across the street
- Promoting safe driving
- Lowering vehicle speeds
